Biodiversity in Ethiopia

Germany has committed 15 million Euro additional funding to the new priority area of bilateral development cooperation ’Conservation and Sustainable use of Biodiversity’. With commitments made in 2013 and 2014 the funds for the bilateral biodiversity program add up to 56.5 million Euro.

Indian Ocean - Conference in the Foreign Office

Around 40 representatives of the political, business, academic and civil society spheres in the Indian Ocean region, the United States and Europe are meeting today (9 June 2015) for an international conference entitled “The Indian Ocean – A Maritime Region on the Rise”. Organised by the Federal Foreign Office in collaboration with the foundations Robert Bosch Stiftung and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, it will involve various panel discussions and expert workshops on such subjects as maritime security and new trade routes. New Ethiopian-German Home Grown PhD Scholarship Programme launched

The Ethiopian Ministry of Education and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) have signed a cooperation agreement on a joint PhD scholarship programme. The agreement shall be in force until 2019. Up to 40 PhD Candidates shall be awarded a scholarship per annual intake.

DW Video: German Football Trainer supports Ethiopian Football Federation

Mr Joachim Fickert, a seasoned German football trainer with substantial experience in Africa and Asia, supports the Ethiopian Football Federation by training and developing the next generation of the Ethiopian national team. Mr Fickert’s engagement is financed for two years with sports support funds from the German Foreign Office. The German Olympics Sports Confederation and the German Football Association are partners in this project. Deutsche Welle has now released a video report on activities of Mr Fickert in Ethiopia. Volkswagen to invest R4.5 billion in South Africa

On August 27 at a media briefing in Sandton, Volkswagen Group South Africa announced plans to invest over R4.5 billion for new models to be produced in South Africa by 2017. The new investment will target the enhancement of the existing factory in Uitenage, the local supplier base and the training of employees for the next generation of products to be manufactured in Africa.

Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation promotes academic cooperation between excellent scientists and scholars from abroad and from Germany. To this end, it grants more than 700 research fellowships and research awards annually. These allow researchers from all over the world to come to Germany to work on a research project they have chosen themselves together with a host and collaborative partner. One of the Foundation’s programmes, the Georg Forster Research Fellowship, especially targets postdoctoral and experienced researchers from emerging and developing countries who work on a research question with relevance to development. The foundation’s network embraces over 26,000 scientists and scholars from all disciplines in more than 130 countries worldwide - including 51 Nobel Prize winners.
