The project "Food Assistance for Somali, Eritrean and Sudanese Refugees" aims at improving food security in several refugee camps in Ethiopia. Germany supports this project until the end of 2014 with a grant of 750.000€.

Change in visa application procedures

From 6 June 2013, the visa section of the Embassy Addis Abeba will be connected to VIS, the data exchange service of the Schengen states.  From this date onwards, all applicants have to present themselves in person at the visa section of the Embassy, unless they were fingerprinted during an earlier applicatino for a Schengen-visa and if that application was lodged no longer than 59 months previously.

Berlin celebrates 20 years of a democratic South Africa

Berlin was host to a grand celebration on August 28 in honour of South Africa's 20 years of democracy. A concert by Hugh Masekela launched four days of activities in the German capital featuring the rich art and vibrant creative spirit that defines South Africa today. Germany's Foreign Office and the South African Embassy in Berlin jointly presented the series of cultural events.

Weekly Feature: Light and shadow at Lake Victoria

German lighting manufacturer Osram designed an alternative for around 175,000 fishermen on Lake Victoria: a bright energy-saving lamp which, together with its rechargeable battery, is small enough to fit onto the floating wooden platforms. These replace kerosene lamps on board that are more costly and damage both the environment and the health of the fisherman.

BASF opens new production facility in Nairobi

Chemical industry giant BASF recently inaugurated a new production plant in Nairobi. The production site will not only provide employment and expertise, but also allow BASF to better meet the increasing demand for construction chemicals in Eastern Africa. Germany's Deputy Ambassador to Kenya, as well as Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary of Foreign Affairs and International Trade participated in the inauguration.
