60th Anniversary of the University of Gondar

The University of Gondar (UoG) recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and recognized the important role of the University of Leipzig in the development of the University. The UoG started as a Medical College under the Addis Ababa University. Since 1979 the University of Leipzig played an important role in establishing high quality medical training in Gondar.

"African Border Day" at the AUC Headquarters on 06 June

On 6 June the African Union celebrated its annual “African Border Day” at the AUC Headquarters in Addis Ababa. Germany as the main partner of the African Union Border Programm is happy to take part in this celebration.

This year´s “African Border Day” highlights the 50th anniversary of the Resolution of the Organization of African Unity on border disputes between African States. In her speech the German Ambassador, Lieselore Cyrus, stressed the importance of undisputed borders as prerequisites for peace, security and stability: “Borders should not be seen as barriers but as bridges”. As the main partner Germany supports the African Union Border Programme since 2008 with approx. 24 Mio. Euro to demarcate and delimitate borders and to promote cross border cooperation and development.

Federal Government Policy Guidelines for Africa

The German cabinet decided on 21 May the new Federal Government Policy Guidelines for Africa drafted by the Federal Foreign Office. The guidelines summarise the context, principles and focuses of Germany’s Africa policy.

Neven Subotic visits the German Embassy

Neven Subotic, Defender at the German Football Club Borussia Dortmund, and Sandra Cress of the One World Futbol Project visited the German Embassy Addis Ababa on 21 May 2014. The Neven Subotic Foundation is providing schools in Ethiopia with clean drinking water and toilets. Their projects are mainly implemented in the Tigray region and Subotic is on a ten day trip in Ethiopia to visit the projects of his foundation. The One World Futbol Project is distributing ‚indestructible‘ footballs to children in need in developing countries. The Neven Subotic Foundation and the One World Futbol Project visited the German Embassy to discuss possibilities of future cooperation.

Handover Ceremony at United Nations Food Programme Warehouse

On April 10, 2014, German Ambassador to Ethiopia, Lieselore Cyrus, attended a handover ceremony of German food at a United Nations World Food Programme warehouse in Adama and visited a nearby food distribution site, to mark Germany’s latest contribution to WFP supported relief, social protection and resilience operations of the Government of Ethiopia.

An international jury selected the finalists for the People's Choice Awards in the contest's 14 languages. All the nominees are presented with short descriptions . Change in visa application procedures

From 6 June 2013, the visa section of the Embassy Addis Abeba will be connected to VIS, the data exchange service of the Schengen states.  From this date onwards, all applicants have to present themselves in person at the visa section of the Embassy, unless they were fingerprinted during an earlier applicatino for a Schengen-visa and if that application was lodged no longer than 59 months previously.

Germany and Uganda build bridges by sharing culture

Uganda and Germany maintain close and long-standing relations within the fields of culture, education and sports. Key to the success of this relationship are the supporting organizations active in Uganda, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Goethe-Zentrum Kampala/Ugandan German Cultural Society, the Educational Exchange Service and the ‘Schools: Partners for the Future’ (PASCH).

Partners in financial systems development, agricultural and rural finance

Since 2004, the German Government has committed over 66 million Euro to financial systems as part of Ugandan-German development cooperation with the aim to enable the Ugandan financial sector to drive inclusive economic growth, strengthen the agricultural sector and enhance opportunities for the rural population.

Ugandan-German cooperation in the energy sector

Energy is a priority sector for Ugandan-German development cooperation. Since 2004, the German Government and the German KfW Bankengruppe have provided more than 120 million Euro in grants, loans and technical assistance to the sector, which is aimed at improving power generation from renewable energy sources, increasing access to power especially in rural areas, as well as promoting the sustainable use of biomass.
