DAAD-Pre-selection at the German Embassy
The annual pre-selection of the PhD scholarships in Germany took place in November at the Embassy. 44 very qualified applicants, mostly young lecturers from Ethiopian universities, were interviewed by a high profile pre-selection committee. The committee consisted of Professors from various disciplines, most of them DAAD- and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Alumni, who had thoroughly scrutinized the application documents beforehand.
The applicants had to present an excellent PhD project, have very good grades and references and clearly state why Germany was their preferred choice. Many of them were able to convince the panel.
The Committee chose 16 applications to be forwarded for the final selection to Germany. The final selection for applications from all over Africa will take place in early February. A panel of eminent German Professors, who had been designated by the DAAD Board, will make the decisions.
In April 2012, we expect about ten of the best Ethiopian PhD applicants to commence their three and half years stay in Germany with a German language course. The pre-selection committee was chaired by Christoph Hansert, Director of the DAAD Regional Office for Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. The preparations of the pre-selection were done by a well experienced team of the German Embassy in Addis Ababa.
