On 9 May 2017 the German Ambassador in Ethiopia, Joachim Schmidt, and Dr. Yumiko Yokozeki, Officer in Charge of UNESCO Addis Ababa signed the project-contract on “UNESCO film on biodiversity issues at Lake Tana”, which is financed by the German Climate Fund with almost 30.000 Euro (28,000 USD).
The film is aimed at conserving the existing bird life at the Lake Tana. It addresses the changes in the environment of the lake, affecting the existence and ecosystem of the birds. This film-project contributes to the improvement of the ecological footprint and civil engagement through public awareness. It will emphasize disseminating information and creating awareness for the need to conserve and wisely use Ethiopia’s natural resources and environment. Moreover, the films will highlight geo-hazards, in particular massive soil erosion, and the associated siltation of Lake Tana.
The production of the film – episodes of app. 30 min. each – is expected to be completed by the end of this year. KANA TV will be asked to translate the film into Amharic. The episodes will be distributed to all diplomatic missions in Addis Ababa with the intention to use it for educational purposes in Ethiopia.
