Important step towards a settlement of the Sudan conflict
After months of negotiations, in the evening of 8 August 2016 the Sudanese opposition groups SPLM-N, JEM-Gibril, SLA-Minni Minnwi and the Umma-party signed the “Roadmap Agreement” devised by the AU High-Level Implementation Panel in Addis Ababa. The government of the Federal Republic of Germany, represented by the German Embassy in Addis Ababa, vitally contributed to the successful process of negotiations with logistical support.
In the evening, Ambassador Joachim Schmidt, together with representatives of the so-called Troika (Great Britain, Norway and the USA) and the EU, delivered a joint statement congratulating both sides for the signing of the Roadmap and encouraging them to take the next necessary steps.
In the following days, ensuing talks will be held between the government and the opposition to cease the hostilities and to ensure humanitarian access – there will be parallel talks between Darfurian groups and the government regarding the situation in Darfur as well as between theSPLM-N and the government regarding the “Two Areas” South Kordofan and Blue Nile. The talks will be logistically supported by the Berghof-Foundation, a project financed by the German Foreign Office.
