German cooperation

New logo for Germany’s cooperation projects abroad

From now on the new logo for Germany’s cooperation projects abroad is “german cooperation”. This goes particularly for projects run by Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau – Reconstruction Loan Corporation (KfW), for example, or the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), which have often used only their own logos to date.

Cross-border cooperation on famine prevention in the Horn of Africa – Dirk Niebel meets IGAD Executive Secretary Mahboub Maalim

In Berlin, Dirk Niebel, German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, met with Mahboub Maalim, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). Their discussion focused on ways in which Germany and IGAD can continue their cooperation to prevent future famines in the Horn of Africa.

Dirk Niebel said, "Drought and hunger do not stop at national borders. So I welcome the fact that the countries of the region are working together and are increasing their investment in neglected arid areas. We will not be able to prevent drought in future, but we can help people in the Horn of Africa to enhance preparedness and resilience. In that context, it is crucial that agricultural development in the Horn of Africa be fostered. We will even go beyond that sector. In future, we will also support special programmes in areas such as education, health, water, and infrastructure, and these programmes will take account of the special challenges of drought-affected regions. One vital aspect in that context continues to be that it is the governments of the region that are responsible for taking action. All that we can do through our support is to make a sustained contribution."

IGAD is a regional organisation in which Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda and Djibouti engage in cross-border cooperation. Executive Secretary Maalim has come to Berlin to take part in a BMZ-hosted international expert discussion on how to strengthen resilience to drought in the Horn of Africa.

In response to the drought crisis, the German government provided over 160 million euros for the Horn of Africa in 2011. Three million euros of this has been committed for the IGAD Secretariat to help it play its regional coordination role with a view to ending drought disasters. Germany also made available a cross-border regional fund of 20 million euros for the IGAD member states to help them enhance their resilience to drought.
