On 7 July 2016, German Ambassador Joachim Schmidt and the Ethiopian Minister of Finance and Economic Cooperation Abdulaziz Mohammed signed a treaty on Technical Cooperation to augment the projects “Strengthening Drought Resilience of Pastoral and Agropastoral Livelihoods in Ethiopian Arid and Semi-Arid Lands” and “Sustainable Land Management” by 5 Mio. Euro. The original financial support to fight the drought caused by climate phenomenon El Niño took place in December 2015.

The funds are aimed at the acquisition of seeds and fodder for cattle as well as for “cash-for-work”-activities conducted by the GIZ, the German government’s implementing agency for Technical Cooperation, in two different ongoing projects. Besides further financial support of the Financial Cooperation, financial assistance of multilateral organisations, and the sponsoring of members of the civil society, these funds are part of the German support of Ethiopia in light of one of the worst sustenance-crises for decades.

In all, Germany has raised more than 60 Mio. Euro to assist Ethiopia in mastering the current drought in addition to its financial support of the European Union and the United Nations.
