‘Connected through Excellence’ is the claim of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. The Foundation has been funding individual scientists, who excel in their field of study, since 1925 and is partly funded by the German Federal Foreign Office. Scholarship holders of the Foundation become part of a lifelong, global network of scientific excellence. The Humboldt Congresses are one of the numerous activities and programmes that the Foundation offers to its members. These congresses are regularly organized around the world in order to discuss topical issues in science. On Friday, January 15 the first ever Humboldt Congress on ‘the inclusion of female scientists in research’ was held in Ethiopia. Ambassador Joachim Schmidt welcomed the participants of the congress during the opening of the event. Over the years, 12 scientists have been funded by the Humboldt Foundation in Ethiopia, which makes the country part of the vanguard on the African continent.
