Visit of the Lord Mayor of the city of Leipzig to its sister-city of Addis Ababa
Within the framework of the town twinning, in existence since 2004, a delegation of the city of Leipzig visited the city of Addis Abeba from 18 – 20 April 2017. Headed by Leipzig’s mayor Burkhard Jung, accompanied by his wife, as well as members of the city’s municipality, the delegation consisted of representatives of the fire brigade, the Youth Symphony Orchestra Leipzig, and the zoo of Leipzig. Main purpose of the visit was the naming of one of the Addis’ trams “Leipzig”. In the city of Leipzig a tramway already exists carrying the name “Addis Ababa”.
Both Mayors Jung and Deriba Kuma animatedly exchanged views in regard to urban development. During a visit of the main firehouse in Addis Ababa, possible future co-operations were determined.
On Wednesday, 19 April, during the presence of Ambassador Joachim Schmidt, the naming of the tram “Leipzig” was ceremoniously celebrated in the tramway depot of Kaliti. In their respective speeches, the town twinning was commended as the basis for the facilitation of mutual understanding and the convergence to each other’s culture. The complementing performances of musicians of the Youth Symphony Orchestra Leipzig and the Yared Music School Addis Ababa decidedly contributed to this event.
The maiden voyage of the tram “Leipzig” through Addis Ababa followed the naming. The day ended with an evening reception in the residence of the German Ambassador. On the last day of the visit, several work meetings ensued in regard to the sister cities’ cooperation in the fields of transport, the art in architecture of the elevated railway line in Addis Ababa, the reconstruction of the zoo of Addis Ababa, and the fire brigade. All participants commended the visit being constructive and valuable.
