On 23.05.2017 40 Ethiopian students were presented with the official scholarship documents of the German Academic Exchange Service (“Deutscher Adademischer Austauschdienst” – DAAD) in the residence of the German Ambassador in Addis Ababa.
The duration of the scholarships will be two years for master- as well as postgraduate students, covering various courses of study at German universities. This year, the DAAD granted 788 scholarships, thereof app. 90 % to Ethiopian students. This is a significant increase to 2016 (708 scholarships).
The Chargé d’Affaires a.i., Mr Matthias Schauer, emphasized in his speech, that these scholarships are not solely financing part of a degree course. Living in Germany, they also provide a profound knowledge of a foreign country, and besides the advanced academic education offering the scholars a deep insight into Germany’s culture and language. This will most certainly prove a formative experience for their future, and strongly influence their further career paths. Highlighting successful DAAD-alumni, he pointed out that currently five members of the Ethiopian government are former DAAD-scholars.
The DAAD runs an office close to the Addis Ababa University (Information Centre Ethiopia, c/o International Leadership Institute, Room 103, Sedest Kilo, P.O. Box 32539, Addis Ababa, www.daad-ethiopia.org , Mail: daad-ethiopia%27%org,office ) and is open to advise all interested students.
